About us
My name is Richard Darmanin, I was raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico where my father, an immigrant from the island of Malta, started a family freight logistics business in 1956. Growing up surrounded by trucks, we developed a deep fascination for old trucks, as for trucks are the backbone of commerce and the economy. In the year 2000, I stumbled upon a tiny advertisement in the Hemingways Motor News publication that showcased a meticulously refurbished 1922 Hal-Fur truck for sale in Cincinnati, Ohio. This truck had been discovered by a Consolidated Freight Ways truck driver on a farm, and it took him 20 years to rebuild it. I purchased it and shipped it to Puerto Rico, where she was displayed in front of our office for two decades.
After purchasing the Hal-Fur, I was
on a mission to buy another antique
truck to use as a promotional truck
for our Handyman Service business
in Puerto Rico. I came across this
1928 Chevy popcorn truck that we
could use at events and purchased
it in an auction in Chicago, IL.
In 2017 Puerto Rico was badly hit by hurricane “Maria” which left much
destruction and devastation. This left leaving myself, my wife Maggie, and
my son Charles with no choice other than to close our business and move
to beautiful San Diego, California, where I could pursue my passion for
sailing.
It wasn’t until 2021 that we were finally able to transport both trucks from
Puerto Rico to San Diego. As expected, they had suffered major
deterioration from the years of being exposed to the elements, but mostly
from the damage caused by the hurricane.
My son Charles and I immediately started working on the significant
restoration project of both trucks. We forged connections with the Motor
Transport Museum in Campo, CA and were very fortunate to have had a
92-year-old master mechanic to get the trucks running again, as well as an
82-year-old master carpenter that restored all of the wood work. Their
meticulous work and expertise, extended to the paint shop, and the help
of so many more ensured our trucks would once again shine in their full
glory.
Now faced with two beautifully restored trucks, a 1922 Hal-Fur and a 1928
Chevy, and the addition of a reconditioned 1950 replica of a Clydesdale
Beer wagon, we pondered their purpose. Inspiration struck in the craft
beer haven of San Diego giving birth to “Tipsy Truck”, a mobile beer truck/
bar.
Charles and I have ventured into the world of event rentals, and today, we
find ourselves in the heart of San Diego, servicing a myriad of events. Our
mission is to provide a unique experience that transcends time.
We have embarked on a journey of a well-traveled road aiming to be a
conversation starter, a blend of old world-charm and modern-day fun.
Join us on this adventure where we celebrate the spirit of nostalgia and
bring joy to every event we serve.
